PoE Switch Budget
Add devices, inspect the port map, and find power or compatibility conflicts before planning a deployment.
Fictional classroom presets, not verified products. Every watt entry is the allocation at the switch (PSE), including cable allowance—not just the device’s measured draw. Changes recalculate immediately.
1. Set the switch limits
Use the available PoE output budget, not the switch PSU’s AC-input or nameplate wattage. Uniform-port teaching model; actual switches may have mixed port types or shared-bank limits.
2. Add the devices
One device uses one port. Quantity 0 excludes a group. Data-only uplinks use a port but no PoE budget. Presets can be renamed and adjusted.
3. Inspect the live plan

Switch port map
Select a port for details. Devices fill ports in group order; this is an allocation diagram, not a prediction of which ports a real switch would power or deny.
7 W allocated · Type 1 · 802.3af · 15.4 W
Fits this port’s stated capability. The entire switch must also pass its total budget and port-count checks.
How this model works · ratings and limitations
We add quantity × switch-side allocation for every group. Each device must fit its required PoE type and the modeled per-port limit. Total demand must fit the switch’s available PoE output budget. Optional growth reserve is a percentage of that budget kept unused; it is not an IEEE requirement and is not the PSU tool’s 30% load allowance.
Type 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 use switch-side ceilings of 15.4 / 30 / 60 / 90 W. Power available at the device is lower because cabling has losses. Do not put a device-side watt figure into this tool without an appropriate switch-side allocation. Actual allocation can depend on classification, LLDP, firmware, power supplies, and the switch’s policy. Passive PoE and proprietary modes are not modeled.
Presets are invented teaching examples, not product specifications. Replace them with documented allocations and verify the exact port capabilities, power supplies, bank limits, boot loads, accessories, and configurations. This is not UPS sizing or mains-circuit design, and no network is contacted.
