Hash Calculator

Calculate a text or file checksum, then compare it with an expected hash. Your input stays in your browser.

Focus on this tool.

Choose your input

Text is encoded as UTF-8. A file is hashed as its original bytes.

Spaces and line breaks count. Text is not trimmed or normalized. Limit: 1,000,000 characters.

Digest & comparison

Calculate a hash to display the digest here.

Comparison always uses hexadecimal, even when the output is displayed as Base64. Letter case and surrounding whitespace are ignored.

What a matching hash does—and does not—show

A checksum comparison is useful only when the expected digest comes from a trustworthy source and uses the same algorithm. A match alone does not prove that a file is safe, identify its publisher, or scan it for malware.

This tool produces unkeyed digests, not encryption, signatures, or password storage. SHA-1 is offered only for legacy comparisons. Files are read directly in the browser; nothing is uploaded or stored by this tool.

Text-area line endings may differ from a saved file’s bytes. Use File mode when checking a published file checksum. An empty text input or a zero-byte file still has a valid digest.

Reference: Web Crypto digest documentation. Hashing requires Web Crypto in a secure context: HTTPS when published, or this local preview.
