What are we learning?
Explain how the Registry stores user, application and Windows settings.
Lesson 2.3 · Opening
Explain how the Registry stores user, application and Windows settings.
I can independently explain Registry keys and values correctly, and verify both original data and Windows behavior after restoring my preference.
I can distinguish a Registry key from its values.
I can compare original and restored configuration.

Before class, verify a working assigned Windows 11 guest, same-account Registry access and an approved recovery snapshot. The lesson now supplies Registry-Lab-2.3.zip and guides students through extracting five harmless files and marking only Support-note.txt Hidden. No prepared sample folder, specific MSI, 7-Zip version or earlier lesson is required. Preserve existing folders/backups: a repeat attempt uses a fresh folder, not overwrite. If guest internet is unavailable, transfer this same data-only ZIP into guest Downloads before class. Keep original Explorer preferences and protected operating-system visibility unchanged. Ticket 3 reads ProgramFilesDir/CommonFilesDir in Windows CurrentVersion; it is read-only and requires no extra app. The 7-Zip discussion screenshot is a concept example, not a required installation. Never ask students to weaken security, substitute another account or modify the host.
Practice guest only. Export the specified branch before changing a preference. Never edit machine-wide entries, delete keys, change security controls or import downloaded Registry files. Stop if permissions or paths differ.
Original explanation of Pearson IT Specialist objective 2.3; the practical recovery investigation is a local extension.
Configuration awareness is an introductory connection, not compliance evidence.
Expose configuration and scope misconceptions.
Answer and read the explanation.
Can students distinguish storage from application behavior?
Teach the Registry hierarchy, scope and recovery limits using genuine Windows evidence.
Explain the comparisons and justify original answers.
Can a novice explain the diagram and the visible data?
Support student preparation, scoped backup/change/restore and the read-only Windows investigation.
Prepare the supplied files, follow each action and attach evidence in flow.
Do the restored value and visible behavior agree?
2025 objective 2.3: purpose of the Registry. Recovery practice is a local extension.
Keys, subkeys, values and configuration.
Current-user and local-computer scope.
Export selected key before changes; import the trusted own backup.
Merges saved keys and values; not full-VM rollback.
Recorded MSI product name/version, not proof of application health.

Windows and applications use this hierarchical database to remember many user, application and system settings.
Structured configuration
Session only · Download to save · Submit your PDF through your class assignment system.
Northstar’s help desk needs to distinguish file types, find a hidden training file and read Windows’ configured program folders. Prepare the supplied harmless files in your assigned Windows 11 VM, preserve the original preferences, investigate the evidence and restore your changes. No extra application is required.
Practice VM only—not the physical host. Use the same signed-in account throughout. Do not delete keys, edit HKLM, change permissions, reveal protected operating-system files or import files from the internet. Use only your own checked backup from this session. Stop if a path, permission or result differs.
You are helping a fictional support team understand configuration—not trying random Registry fixes.
Add each screenshot at its capture step while the result is still open in your VM. Evidence & PDF lets you review those same images, add your name, download and submit externally. Download to save progress; closing this page loses the session.
